RSNA, or the Las Vegas Strip? Takeaways from the 2023 Annual Conference

The 2023 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting in Chicago just wrapped up. With more than 34,000 attendees, 400+ educational courses and scientific sessions, and 730+ exhibitors, this event is the largest medical imaging conference in the world. And at a scale that is both impressive, and a bit daunting.

Walking the seemingly endless rows of booths and displays feels a bit like walking down the Las Vegas Strip for the first time – bright flashy signs everywhere beckoning you to try the many shows, meals, activities, and casinos all vying for your business. There are lots of choices, but how do you know which ones are good? How much should they cost? This experience at RSNA is a good reminder of just how complex the selection and buying process for medical technology is.

Too many options can be overwhelming

With continued innovation in medical technology, and a steady stream of new products being introduced each year, comes the downside of sometimes having too many choices, variables and product features available. With suppliers all positioning their products as the best, fastest and easiest to use, it can be hard to compare options and configurations and conclude with confidence which ones will be best for your organization. Add the need to consider not only equipment specifications and price, but also training, warranty, service and the many other drivers of cost that add up over the life of equipment, and it is easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer number of variables to consider. How can you be confident you’re making the best decisions?

There are many positives of the exciting and immersive experience RSNA offers. It is energizing to see the new technologies and clinical solutions that can have a massive and positive impact on patient care. However, once you leave the exhibit hall, turning what you’ve seen or learned about from the glitzy supplier booths and presentation into a confident purchase decision can be harder than you think. It doesn’t need to be.
