Miga has received reports of tightening supply of neuro sponges and neuro strips (also called “neuro patties/paddies,” “surgical patties”, or “cottonoids”). This is reportedly caused in part by a 3/18/26 voluntary recall issued by Medline, a major supplier of neuro sponges, of all their SKUs due to high levels of endotoxins.
Neuro sponges and strips are used for a wide array of procedure types (craniotomies, shunt placements, spine surgeries, ENT surgeries, microsurgical procedures, etc.). Both product types include a radiopaque marker to minimize the risk of retained surgical item (RSI) events; many include an attached string for improved visibility and removal
This recall, combined with multiple suppliers discontinuing neuro sponge/strip product lines, has caused a widespread backorder among remaining suppliers. Other known suppliers include American Surgical, DeRoyal, Medicom AMD-Ritmed, Piling Weck, Stevens, and SDP. NOTE: All suppliers indicated that they are on limited allocation and not accepting new customers.
